REPORT: Ramsbottom United 0-1 Walshaw Sports

RAMSBOTTOM UNITED 0 WALSHAW SPORTS 1

TUESDAY 17th JULY 2018

PRE SEASON FRIENDLY @ BOLTON ARENA

Report by Adam Clark

Ramsbottom United took to the field on Tuesday evening for the second time this pre-season, Rammy boss Mark Fell has worked hard in getting this pre-season game on as many clubs around the local area have been having pitch issues due to the warm weather we’ve been having.

This game was played at Bolton Arena next to the Macron Stadium, the Rams took to the field against Walshaw Sports a team from the 7th tier of non-league football. The last time we have these two teams playing on record was on the 19th November 1994 in the Whitbread Cup – The Rams winning that one 2-0.

1st HALF

The Rams started brightly in the first twenty minutes of the game shots from Jerome Wright & Dominic Marie were blocked by Walshaw ‘keeper Josh Dalton. Walshaw went 1-0 up two minutes before the half hour mark, Former Rammy man Carl Lomax ran through on goal and slotted home into the bottom corner of the net.

HALF TIME: RAMSBOTTOM UNITED 0 WALSHAW SPORTS 1

2nd HALF

Wholesale changes were made throughout the second half – it was actually hard to work out who was on the pitch. Rammy’s best chance to level the scores came in the first and only minute of second half stoppage time when Ryan Ellison brother of Kevin was fouled in the box by a Walshaw defender. Ryan brushed himself down and took the penalty but it was saved well by Walshaw keeper Josh Dalton. Not a great night for the Rams but credit to Walshaw Sports they came with a plan to win the game and it certainly worked and were the better side on the night.

Jack Higgs signs for the Rams

Ramsbottom United have continued their summer recruitment with the signing of Jack Higgs.

The 25 year old arrives with an impressive pedigree including spells at Histon in the National League South and Enfield Town at step 3. Jack was also part of the St Ives team that won promotion from step 4 to step 3. Clearly these teams aren’t North West based, Jack is originally from Essex and moved to Manchester last year for work, he played a handful of games for Glossop at the end of last season. Jack has featured in most of the friendlies so far and was on the scoresheet last night with the Rams equaliser against Fleetwood Town.

Rams boss Mark Fell says the midfielder had been on the Rams radar for some time, “I got a couple of reports about how good he looked last season, so we had a chat in the summer and he was keen to settle down at Rammy. He’s a classy midfielder and with every game and training session he’s getting fitter. He’s been great in the dressing room and the lads have really taken to him.”

Higgs wasn’t short of offers in the summer, but the Rams ambition made his switch to the Riverside a straightforward one. “When I spoke to the gaffer and saw how the club operate from a football professionalism perspective it was a no brainier. It’s a great club with a passionate fanbase and I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Higgs, pictured during his spell at Enfield, can be next seen for the Rams at Nelson on Saturday, KO is 2pm. He is also available for player sponsorship, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for details.

Dominic Marie signs for the Rams.

Ramsbottom United has further bolstered their 18/19 squad with the addition of Dominic Marie. The 23 year old striker arrives from Hyde where he won promotion last season. The 6ft 3 frontman was plucked from Winsford as a teenager to sign for Halifax and has also had spells with Marine and Prescot before helping Hyde achieve a place in the Evo-Stik premier division last term. Rams boss Mark Fell was pleased to welcome the forward to the club and indicated that this wouldn’t be the end of the summer signings; “We’re still actively recruiting and are very close to at least one other major signing. Dom has fantastic attributes and has scored goals at this level and above, we’ve been without a real pacey number 9 for a while now and in Dom we think we’ve found the answer. He’s very professional in his approach and dedicated, he needs to settle at a club and get his head down, we think he’s going to be a great addition” Rams fans will get their first glimpse of Marie when he is expected to feature against Chester next Tuesday night in a pre-season friendly.

Tom Kennedy signs for the Rams

Ramsbottom United are delighted to secure the signing of Tom Kennedy. The 32 year old arrives with over 400 football league games behind him for the likes of Bury, Rochdale, Leicester City and Barnsley. Last season he helped Bangor City to runners up spot in the Welsh Premier League.

A left full back by trade, but equally comfortable in a central midfield role, Greenmount-based Tom put pen to paper as he joined up with his new teammates at last night’s training session and Rams boss Mark Fell believes the capture to be a significant one.

“We wanted some more streetwise experience, we wanted a couple of real leaders to support us through tight games, and we wanted players who have a passion and desire for success, Tom meets every criteria. I met him a few weeks ago and was impressed with his attitude and outlook to the game, getting a player of this calibre is a major coup for this football club, I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Tom also spoke of the reasons why he chose the Rams for his summer move, “I’d made the decision that I was coming out of full time football at the end of last season and starting a new career, but I’ve still the hunger to play. Rammy is local for me, it’s a good standard and when I met the gaffer his plans were clear. I’m looking forward to getting pre-season under my belt and helping the club progress ultimately back the Evo-Stik Premier Division.”
