In a game switched to Merseyside due to the recent flooding in Ramsbottom, the Rams exited this year's League Cup at the hands of Marine, following two early goals for the home side.

From then on, however, it was the visitors who took the game to the Crosby side, and peppered the home goal on numerous occasions, but managed to breach the rearguard only once.

Ashley Shenton, making his debut for the club following the unavailability of the regular custodian, his brother Grant, was beaten as early as the seventh minute, by a superb 25-yard drive from Danny Mitchley, which flew into the net giving him no chance.

Just ten minutes later Lloyd Ellams popped up near goal to put the hosts into a comfortable lead. That was it as far as comfort was concerned, for the Rams headed failed to drop and for the remainder of the game it was the visitors who looked the more likely winners.

With the scores still level, Michael Oates wasted a glorious opportunity to open the scoring when he screwed the ball wide from inside the area, and before the second, Alex Meaney fired the first of a multitude of efforts inches wide of the post.

Meaney, who took over the captaincy for the night, had a superb game winning just about every battle in midfield, and he was inches away from notching a goal on no less than four occasions with his foraging runs and opportunist strikes.

Whilst the Rams always looked likely to gain a reward for their efforts, it took a superb tip over by Shenton minutes before half-time to deny Karl Clair a third for the home side.

The second half saw the Rams in the ascendancy, and a deserved goal came on 58 minutes.  No surprise that it was the man Meaney who again forced his way through the Marine defence to hammer home and give his side some hope on remaining in the competition.

But despite the continued pressure, with the home side relying more on breakaways, a second goal just would not come, and the final whistle blew leaving the side to concentrate on escaping the relegation clutches.

More performance like this, and there is every possibility that such a hope will materalise.
